A Peek at My Mad Scientists

Last week, my kiddos were all about some science! We began our first little mini unit on the scientific method, but first we had to discuss some things to look forward to in science!

We began our science instruction with a fun little thinking/writing/making craftivity. When I saw Amy Lemon’s mathematicians, (isn’t she the best?!?) I just couldn’t resist. They really didn’t fit into my math instruction, so what better way to include these cute little dudes than by turning them into mad scientists?!

After we created a list of scientific words and actions that we would need to transform into a scientist, the kiddos wrote about what they hope to learn this year during our science studies!

After our brains were focused on all things science, we were ready to set up our notebooks for the year! Once again, we turned to good ol’ Mod Podge! Yep…love this stuff!

I introduced the tools that we would be responsible for using/knowing this year in 3rd grade. Then, we completed a little match and design on our science notebook covers!

Finally, we ended the week working our way through the scientific method. Thanks to Ginger, my kiddos fell completely in love with the Boat Afloat experiment!

I have to say…they made some pretty amazing boats! I think I’ve got some future scientists/engineers on my hands!

Hope y’all are having a great week!

A Peek at Reader’s Workshop

This week, I was finally able {a.k.a. I remembered my camera} to take a few pictures of what has been going on in our classroom over the past week! It is seriously over 50 pictures! No joke! In order to save you from total boredom picture overload, I have decided to split up our week just a bit! Beginning with my  favorite part of any day…Reader’s Workshop!

We have been working hard to get our Reading Binders set up and ready to go.

Thanks Lesson Plan S.O.S. for such a great resource!

Each day, we begin with a short mini lesson that lasts anywhere from 5-10 minutes…depending on when I can pull myself together and shut my mouth! It is so HARD! I am way guilty of over-teaching! I am working on it! :)

This week, our strategy was identifying character traits. We worked on making inferences and drawing conclusions based on our schema and the words in our text. Of course, these words were added to our “Brianstorm” wall so that the students can refer to them throughout the year!

We began studying character traits by making a sweet little self portrait. {I should have taken pictures of all 19…they were so hilarious}.

Slide15

After the kiddos completed their sweet illustrations, I introduced a list of 12 new character traits. They had to determine which character traits described their personality. We placed our portraits in a sheet protector and put it in the front of our reading binder. We will be adding character traits over the next few weeks and on into the year! This is a great strategy to really expand their vocabulary over a period of time!

After our short minis, the kids transition into book nooks! Here is the list of comfy, cozy places they get to enjoy during their independent reading time!

Slide3

Their book nooks change each day!

This week, the kiddos have been completely engaged in “real reading” while I conference with individual students and hold guided reading groups.

During their independent reading time, the students have been recording completed reads in their reading binder. They have also been completing mini book reports on their genre tickets from my Backpacking Through Genres unit. This, along with their genre graph, has really motivated the students to read across the genres and become exposed to a variety of texts.

This week, the students will begin novel studies during guided reading groups! They can not wait! In fact, last week they hinted at the fact that they were not being challenged enough. And I quote…”Mrs. King, this book was nice, but next week do you think you could give us a challenge?” Umm…I rest my case! Sheesh…give your poor little teacher a break! Ha!

One little addition that I made to my classroom after I began Reader’s Workshop is student book boxes!

The students shop one day a week and place all of their books inside their book boxes! This eliminates ALL talking during Reader’s Workshop! If you do RWS or something similar, I highly recommend reading boxes! I am in LOVE!

Here is a look inside!

After all instruction is complete, the students meet with their chit chat buddies and share all of the learning that was done during their reading time! This is a great way to wrap up all things reading before transitioning into the next subject!

During their reading time, both at school and home, the kiddos have been working extra hard to earn their Oh Snap Reading Points! Maybe that had something to do with the 10+ pies that were smashed in my face at the end of last year!

I am truly blessed with a class that LOVES to read!

This week, (since MAP testing is over) we will be working on selecting those “just right” texts! Thanks to my sweet student teacher and some amazing volunteers, my classroom library is now leveled by Lexile! Praise the Lawd! Here is how I keep the students on track with their book selection!

I am working on compiling all of the resources that I use during my Reader’s Workshop instruction into a file for grades 2-5, so keep your eyes peeled!

What does reading instruction look like in your room?

Pumpkin Biographies & Book Reports {and a little sale}

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…it’s almost fall y’all! I am so loving this fall weather that we have going on in the south! It has been gor-geous! One of the things that I get most excited about when fall draws near is all things pumpkin…pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin pies, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin spice lattes…need I go on??? Praise the lawd for big sweaters! Ha!

I also love to bring all things pumpkin into the classroom! Many of you probably remember the pumpkin book reports that I posted about last year! They look a little something like this…

Yes…we turned pumpkins into our favorite book characters and wrote book reports on our “treats” to match! You can check out more of our pumpkins HERE or HERE! They are so darn cute…even if I do say so myself! This has been a class fave every year! My kids talk about them FOR-E-VER!

That is why I am so excited to introduce my newest version of this unit…

Slide1

As most of you know, I have followed my kiddos from 1st to 3rd. This means that we have put together pumpkin book reports for the last two years! This year, I have decided to switch things up a bit! We will be writing biographies about some of our favorite American Heroes and will create pumpkins to match!

Trick or Treat Biography Reports and Pumpkin Projects will be the highlight of all fall activities in your classroom. Everything you need to get this project up and running is included in this unit. I have created the initial parent letter and poem that will get your parents enthused about their part at home. Then I have created four biography report formats: K-1 Color Copies, K-1 Black and White Copies, 2-6 Color Copies and 2-6 Black and White Copies. Each biography section contains a parent letter, direction sheet, rubric, and fact treat cards. 2-6 has an additional first draft section since their report requires writing.

Or if you prefer the unit book report style, click on any of the pictures below! You can read more about this unit HERE!

And the best part…both units will be on sale until Friday afternoon! Until then, I will leave you with one my favorite pumpkins…

How cute is Annie?!? Ha! Night y’all!

Desire to Celebrate: Motivational Bracelets

Slide1

I am so excited about the easiest and *coolest* motivational tool that I am bringing into the classroom! It is my goal to go a little out of the way for each student every week and highlight something that they have done that I think is really fantastic! I really believe that every child deserves their moment in the spotlight, and so I am going to make it happen!

We are all guilty of becoming so busy that phone calls and parents letters don’t always happen, and if they do, at least 75% of the time, they are about negative behaviors! Sad…but so true! Since my kiddos have been so into these duct tape bracelets and silly bands lately, I thought why not run with the idea! These bracelets will motivate my students and show parents that they did something outstanding and will promote that positive contact from school to home!

I will be giving success bracelets to students when they have a shining moment! I love…love…love the brag tag idea, but just can’t spend another dime! So, I made my own “brag bracelets”, and I think the kids will adore them! It’s the small things right?!?

Slide1

Here is a look at just a few of the bracelets included in the pack!

Also included in this pack are bracelets that remind students about our quotes found on our inspirational words wall from my Desire to Inspire Pack!

Here is a look at what is included:

You can pick up both of these units at TPT anytime!

I am off to get my planning on for the week! I hope that you are all enjoying this beautiful Sunday! Here’s to a great week!
