We’ve Been On Safari…For Three Weeks!

This has been us…

For three weeks!

Hence the reason I have posted very few pictures and/or why I have not been able to do a weekly rewind. It would literally look like this {at least during writing time}. We have our big academic celebration coming up on Thursday, and  we have been hard at work preparing work/papers/projects to show parents that we really do work and learn at school! ;)

So, where did three weeks of work get us??? Drum roll, please!

Check out the cutest safari men {and women} in 2nd Grade! I saw this adorable little craft on Pinterest and knew that it would be perfect for our final 2nd grade project! Thanks to Buzzing About in Second Grade for such a fab idea! She also has an entire unit on these little guys, which you can check out HERE!

Now, let me break down our interpretation and show you all of the things that we have learned out on safari!

We worked on classifying animals into six groups {mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects}. The front of our vests includes facts that allow us to better categorize creatures that roam our world!

We also focused on a few of our nonfiction text features. Some of the students chose to label their pictures to show characteristics that allowed each animal to fit into a specific class.

Next up, the students each chose a specific animal that they were interested in learning more about. We began with a little research which we used to write animal riddles. We published these riddles into a class book and sent it off to Student Treasures Publishing to make us legit authors! :0) We will be having our author signing this week, so I will be sure to take lots of pictures to share! Since we enjoyed writing our riddles so much, we also included them in our safari guides!

After our riddles were complete, we dug a little further into research about our animals. The students organized and wrote a five paragraph essay to provide all of the information that you could possibly want to know about their animal. They were beyond excited about all of their new learning! I seriously had to hide the computers at one point, because they could have gone on for months instead of weeks! {I loved every minute of their excitement.}

Then to finish it all off, we researched the different ways that animals use camouflage to protect themselves from predators in the wild. Another component that the kiddos could have spent days on! They were SO into this camouflage business!

Here is a look at the finished projects!

The students were beyond proud of their work. So much in fact that many were sad! SAD! They didn’t want for the project to be over! Me on the other hand…sat back and breathed a huge sigh of relief! Ha!

Lovin’ our hallway display!

Now…this is what is waiting for me…

These will hopefully {fingers crossed} be transformed into a complete safari…with live animals…you know…the whole nine yards! Can’t wait to share pictures!

And don’t forget, my EOY {end of year} packs are on sale until tomorrow night! Click on the pictures below to check them out!

Happy, happy Sunday! I hope that your day has been as beautiful as mine! Have a great week, y’all! :)

Ending the Year with a BANG…You Can Too!

I know, I know….life is crazy busy right now! Everything is winding down, but for some reason that makes school even that much more hectic! If you are like me, you are feeling the crunch. I have way too many things to think about over the next few weeks, so I am trying to wrap up my end of the year planning (which only includes a bazillion things)! You feel me?!? Tell me you do!

Here are a few things that we will be doing to wrap up the year!

We are in the process of finishing our EOY writing portfolios. These are turning out so super cute and the kids can not wait for our writing celebration so they can reveal all of their fabulous writings/projects to their parents.

Here is how they are looking so far…

Now we just have to add a few pictures, complete the writing on the back, get our classmates signatures, add our writings, and we are ready to go! If you are interested in a EOY writing portfolio, you can check out my unit by clicking the picture below.

During our writing celebration, we will also put the finishing touches on our time capsules that we have been working on this year! This is a great way to end the year and make goals for the future!

Today I finished up my classroom awards for the year. I am excited to try out a little something new by incorporating classroom superlatives. This year, my kiddos will be casting votes for their classmates, and I know they will just love what their friends award them! (AND…if I don’t like what they choose, I can always fudge it a bit!) I think that this will be the perfect ending to a fabulous year!

Along with these awards, the students will also be planning for their future (or…next school year)! :)

They will be making director’s chairs and will write about what they will do when they direct their own life movie next year!

And finally, we are in the beginning stages of our Dig into Learning buckets. My mom volunteers for my classroom on Wednesdays, and she has already promised a reward to the student that comes back with all addition and subtraction facts completely memorized! The competition is ON! :)

If you need an exciting way to motivate students through the summer, you can snag this unit at my shop.

Now, if we can just manage to get all of this finished, life will be good…REAL good!

All of the units above will be on sale in my TPT shop until Sunday night! Get them while they’re hot! :)

We’ve almost made it, friends!!! Have a great week (or what’s left)!

This is for you!

Sorry I have been a little MIA lately, but end of the year madness is upon us! We are crazy busy preparing for our big academic celebration which is one week from Thursday! It is kind of a big deal! I can’t wait to show you pictures of all that we have been working on! So until then, I’ll leave you with this…

14 days…but who’s counting??? ME!!!!

How many more days for you, bloggy friends?!?

What We’ve Been Up To…

This week, our “big kids” have been busy with our statewide testing, so we have been in our classroom….ALL DAY…EVERY DAY….literally…it rained = no recess! Call in the reinforcements…aka…all of the hands on activities that I could possibly find!

In math, we have been working on measurements…capacity style. One day, we just had to do a little baking in the classroom to help them really grasp the concept. I gave the students their ingredients, the recipe, and baking tools. Their only instructions were to work together as a team and get the job done! It was so fun to watch them work together, assign jobs, and cheer one another on. They were even in charge of cleaning up their mess…completely!

At the end of the day, the students enjoyed their baked goods.

Since it was raining, we enjoyed some time with our reading partners during book chat time! If you haven’t checked out Beth Newingham’s Reading Partnership ideas, you are missing out! My kiddos are so in LOVE with book chats!

I have been amazed by how detailed their discussions have been lately!

In science, we have been continuing our study of biomes around our world. This week was all about the rainforest. The students researched animals found in each layer. Then they created this project to show where each animal could be found. Finally, we wrote the layers on sticky notes and made it into a little game. The students rotated around the room and used the sticky notes to identify each layer of a friend’s rainforest.

We were also busy bees preparing our Mother’s Day gifts. I saw an idea on Pinterest and ran with it. I knew it would be a hit or miss, so thank goodness it was a success! They turned out so cute and the kiddos were so excited to give them to their sweet moms!

Mother's Day

We are down 16 days! These next few weeks will be crazy busy with field days, writing celebrations, academic celebrations, awards day….and on…and on…and on!!!! Bring it on! :0) Have a restful weekend, sweet friends!
